Outside Scholarships
Outside Scholarships are funded by private individuals, foundations, and organizations. They play an important role in providing gift revenue that you can use to pay your educational costs. You can apply for numerous outside scholarships online, although some scholarships require you to complete a paper application. All have certain required qualifications that applicants must meet, and all have an application filing deadline.
This guide is provided to permit easy access to some available outside scholarships, many of which are local or regional. The content of this guide is frequently revised as old scholarship offers expire and new ones take their places. There are many other outside scholarships available that aren’t covered in this guide, so be sure to do other searches related to your intended major, your parents’ employers, your church or denomination, and other unique aspects about you.
Legitimate scholarship offers will require specific information about you and often the application requires you to provide a written statement about your need or qualification eligibility, but none will ask for personal financial access information (your personal bank account or credit card information). In your searches, those kinds of personal financial information are generally an indication of an illegitimate offer, and they should be avoided. If you are completing an online application, look in the URL address line to be sure you are logged into a secure site (http://). If you are not, the information you provide may be accessed by others. If you are unsure of a specific scholarship or application process, please contact the HSU Financial Aid Office.
- Please check out this single page document on how to stay safe when searching for outside aid. Avoid Unverifiable Aid Offers
- Important Note: Outside scholarships can help fund all areas of your schooling; tuition, books, room and board, transportation, and fees. However, all your financial aid combined CANNOT go over your Cost Of Attendance (COA). If you receive a high number of outside scholarship funds, it could result in the lowering of other federal aid if you filed a FAFSA.
Required Outside Scholarship Report Form
Please Note: that this form is MANDITORY. The purpose of this form is to keep track of your aid for both the fall and spring semesters, and we need to know if a scholarship award will be split into two checks, so we can prepare your account for the year and help you know what aid you have and what room you have left for additional aid options should they be needed. If checks are mailed in or brought into the Financial Aid Office, they will be put on hold until this form has been filled out and turned in to the Scholarship Coordinator.
Instructions for submitting outside scholarships to HSU:
- Make the scholarship check payable to the order of Hardin-Simmons University.
- If a check is made payable to you, please sign the back of the check to endorse it before bringing it in or mailing it to the Financial Aid Office.
- List your first and last name along with your HSU ID# within the memo line of the scholarship check or in an additional communication letter.
- Please indicate if the scholarship check is term specific (EX. Fall Term Only / Fall & Spring).
- If the check and or invoice does not specify how the funds are to be applied to your account, by default we will split the funds in half and apply half to fall and the other half to spring.
- Mail scholarship check and any additional information to:

Champion Energy is committed to supporting our community as we work to power lives and businesses. The Champion Scholars program was created to recognize those that share this commitment. Now in its tenth year, we’re proud to announce that this program has awarded $100,000 in scholarships to 30 deserving students looking to further their education.
Applications are evaluated based on academic performance, awards, volunteerism and an essay response to one of the prompts below:
Prompt 1: Reflect on a time when you experienced adversity. Describe what you learned or gained from that experience.
Prompt 2: Describe your plans for the future. If you are awarded this scholarship, how will this money help you accomplish those future plans?
Prompt 3: When we think of a champion, we often think of a person who has beaten all of their competition to win, but “champion” can also be used as a verb meaning “to support or defend.” What is something that you champion in your life? This could be a cause or a person or a belief. Why is it important to you to champion that cause, person or belief?
Champion Energy Services will award one $5,000 tuition scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s university toward tuition. We also award a $3,000 tuition scholarship for second place and a $2,000 tuition scholarship for third place.

Scholarship TIPS:
- Capitalize your name correctly. Use proper grammar.

- Focus on writing. Ask someone who will be completely honest with you to read/edit your essay.
